Passion vs Profit: Why You Should Build a Business You Enjoy
What happens when the business you started to achieve financial freedom becomes the very thing that frustrates you? We…

There is a sentence I have heard quite a lot lately: “Marriage is not for me.”
If you go on tiktok or Twitter, there’s a marriage pandemic, bad PR actually. No one wants to get married. Most people think marriage is bad, especially women.
Sometimes it comes from someone who has watched their parents fight for years. Sometimes it comes from a woman who has seen a friend lose herself inside a marriage. Sometimes it comes from a man who has watched his friend’s once-peaceful life turn into constant arguments, financial pressure and resentment.Sometimes it comes from someone who has actually experienced a bad marriage. Most times, it comes from social media consumption.
And honestly, I understand why people say it.
Marriage can look frightening when the examples around you are frightening.
But I think we need to ask a more uncomfortable question: Are we actually afraid of marriage, or are we afraid of bad marriages?
Because those are two very different things.
Marriage is an institution. A marriage, however, is a relationship between two people. The quality of that relationship depends heavily on the people inside it, the choices they make, the values they share, the way they handle conflict and, importantly, the way they treat each other.
So when a marriage is miserable, should we blame marriage itself?
Or should we look at the marriage?
Marriage is not a magic wand
One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming that marriage will somehow transform people.
A man who is irresponsible before marriage does not automatically become responsible because he now has a wife. A woman who cannot communicate does not suddenly become emotionally intelligent because she has exchanged vows. Someone who is controlling does not become secure because they now have a wedding ring.
Marriage gives people a deeper commitment, but it does not erase their character. If anything, marriage often exposes parts of people that dating allowed them to hide.
This is why choosing a partner is so important.
You are not simply choosing the person you want to have romantic moments with. You are choosing someone you may have to communicate with when you are angry, make financial decisions with when money is tight, raise children with, disagree with, care for when they are sick and live beside when life is no longer exciting.
That requires more than chemistry.
A wedding cannot fix what dating failed to reveal
Sometimes people spend months or years asking, “Does he love me?” or “Does she love me?” Or asking “what’s your favorite food”. when there are more important questions they should be asking.
How does this person behave when they are angry?
Can they apologise?
Can they take responsibility when they are wrong?
How do they treat people who cannot do anything for them?
What happens when they do not get their way?
How do they handle money?
What do they believe about gender roles?
How do they deal with disagreements?
What happens when one person changes?
Do they respect boundaries?
Can they have difficult conversations without turning everything into a war?
These questions may not sound as romantic as “Do you love me?”, but they can tell you much more about what life with someone might eventually look like.
Research on couples has repeatedly found that the way partners interact during conflict is connected to relationship satisfaction. Negative interaction and withdrawal, for example, have been associated with poorer relationship quality.
The point is not that happy couples never argue. They do.
The difference is often in how they handle the disagreement and what happens after it.
A good marriage can still have problems
This is where the conversation becomes more complicated.
We sometimes talk about marriage as though a healthy marriage is one where the couple never fights.
That is unrealistic.
Two people can love each other deeply and still disagree about money, family, sex, parenting, careers, household responsibilities, religion or where to live.
Sometimes they will annoy each other. Sometimes one person will say the wrong thing. Sometimes both people will be angry at the same time.Conflict alone does not automatically mean the marriage is bad.
In fact, research has found that some disagreement and anger during marital conflict are not necessarily harmful to a marriage in the long term. What matters is the broader pattern of interaction and whether the relationship can recover and function well.
A healthy marriage is not necessarily a conflict-free marriage.
It is a marriage where two people can have conflict without destroying each other.
But there is a difference between conflict and abuse
This distinction is extremely important.
We should never romanticise suffering by saying, “Every marriage has problems.”
Every marriage may have problems.
Every marriage does not have to contain abuse.
Being unable to agree on where to spend Christmas is a relationship problem.
Being insulted, threatened, controlled, beaten, cheated on, or sexually coerced is something else entirely.
The World Health Organization recognises intimate partner violence as including physical, sexual and psychological harm, as well as controlling behaviours. It can have serious and long-lasting consequences for physical and mental health. (World Health Organization)
So when someone says, “Marriage is hard,” we should be careful about what we are normalising.
Marriage can be hard.
Abuse is not simply the normal difficulty of marriage.
A person should not be told to endure violence because “you made a vow.”A vow is not a licence for another person to destroy you.
Sometimes the problem is who we choose
This is perhaps the hardest part of the conversation. We like to believe that love is enough but It isn’t.
You can love someone who is completely wrong for you.You can have chemistry with someone you cannot build a peaceful life with. You can be deeply attracted to someone whose values are fundamentally incompatible with yours. And you can marry someone because you love them and later discover that love alone cannot compensate for dishonesty, irresponsibility, cruelty, addiction, incompatibility or a refusal to grow.
This does not mean every failed marriage happened because someone “chose badly.” Life is more complicated than that. People change. Circumstances change. Some problems only become visible years later.
But it does mean that partner selection matters.
We should stop treating the wedding as the finish line and start treating compatibility, character and emotional maturity as things worth examining before we get there.
And sometimes the problem is how we were taught to understand marriage
In many societies, people are taught what a husband should provide and what a wife should tolerate. They are taught to marry at a certain age. They are taught that having children is proof that the marriage is working. They are taught to stay together at almost any cost because “what will people say?”They are sometimes taught that a woman must endure everything to keep her home. They are sometimes taught that a man must never apologise because apologising makes him weak.
And then we wonder why some marriages become places where two people live together but never truly understand each other.
A marriage cannot thrive on roles alone.
It needs friendship, respect, honesty, responsibility and the willingness of both people to treat each other as human beings.
The man should respect his wife and not oppress and control her. The woman should respect and submit to her husband. No one is bigger than the other. There’s no role for anybody, there’s nothing like 50/50. Many women work now and can contribute financially to the home; so therefore, a man should also do basic chores in the family like cooking and cleaning.
Marriage is a partnership where two people become one, and make their lives easier.
So, is marriage the problem?
Sometimes people leave a terrible marriage and conclude that marriage itself is terrible.
I think that is like eating terrible food at one restaurant and deciding that food is the problem.
The experience was real. The pain was real. The disappointment was real, But the conclusion may be too broad.
A bad marriage can make someone hate marriage.A good marriage can make someone understand why people choose to share their lives with another person in the first place,And even then, a good marriage will not look perfect from the outside.
There will still be bills.
There will still be misunderstandings.
There will be seasons when one person is carrying more than the other.
There will be illness, grief, career problems, family problems and unexpected changes.
The goal is not to find a marriage without problems.
The goal is to build a relationship where the two people are not constantly becoming problems for each other.
Maybe we should stop asking, “Is marriage worth it?”
Perhaps the better question is:
“What kind of marriage am I building, and who am I building it with?”
Because marriage itself does not wake up one morning and decide to lie to you.
Marriage does not decide to humiliate you.
Marriage does not refuse to communicate.
Marriage does not cheat.
Marriage does not beat you.
Marriage does not control your movements or isolate you from everyone you love.
People do.
And while that does not mean every unhappy marriage can be reduced to one person’s character, it does mean we need to be more precise when we talk about the institution.
There is a difference between saying “marriage is difficult” and saying “this particular marriage is damaging me.”
There is a difference between having a difficult season with someone you love and spending years being mistreated by someone who refuses to change.
There is also a difference between leaving a marriage because it has become abusive and deciding that no healthy marriage exists because you have seen unhealthy ones.
Perhaps marriage does not need the defence we keep giving it.
Perhaps what needs more attention is the quality of the relationships we are creating inside it.
Because marriage can be beautiful.
Marriage can also be terrible.
And sometimes the problem was never marriage.
Sometimes, the problem was the marriage.
